When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, I quickly realized that I had become an involuntary member of an exclusive club. And while I would never have consciously chosen membership, I was delighted to find that the cancer community is rich with wonderful, supportive, generous people. Women and men at all stages of their treatment went out of their way to offer advice, share information, breathe encouragement and support to us newbies. Right away I began thinking "I can hardly wait until I too am on the other side and can help." I wanted to give back in gratitude for all that was given to me.
Armed with this intention and the help of my friends, I created a video focusing on hair loss and how to tie a scarf on a bald head. Losing one’s hair due to chemotherapy can seem like a public humiliation – the scarlet letter of illness. But you can get creative, have fun, go glam, stare down the boogeyman. In a situation where you can feel out of control, how you choose to cover - or not cover – your head can be a fabulous opportunity to express yourself and regain a sense of control. I hope these videos will be helpful.
